Annual Zydeco Breakfast in Opelousas featuring Cory Arceneaux & the Hot Peppers
(Opelousas, LA) – The City of Opelousas, Zydeco Capital of the World, hosts the 15th Annual Zydeco Breakfast on Saturday, September 2, 2017, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. under the oak trees surrounding the historic St. Landry Parish Courthouse. This year, festival goers and music lovers will experience the sounds of Corey Arceneaux & the Hot Peppers.
Opelousas Tourism, with assistance from Opelousas Main Street, Inc. and St. Landry Parish Government, host the annual downtown event, which is held in conjunction with the Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Music Festival in Plaisance, Louisiana, which celebrates its 35th festival this year.
Corey Arceneaux, native of Lafayette, represents a new breed of Zydeco music. He has played the accordion since he was 10-years old and has mastered both the diatonic and piano accordion. His music blends with rhythm and blues into traditional Zydeco. He has a strong adherence to the past and performers such as “Clifton Chenier, Fernest Arceneaux and Buckwheat Zydeco.
Arceneaux formed his band, The Hot Peppers 1992. In 1994, he was chosen “Best up and Coming Performer” in the Zydeco’s People Choice Awards. The group released their first recording, Hit and Run, in 1995.
Local downtown businesses will feature a unique assortment of breakfast menu items for sale from Bloody Mary’s and coffee to Clifton Chenier Casserole and pancakes. Local restaurants and bars around the Courthouse Square include Java Square, Back in Time, Palace Café, Dairy Queen and The Brass Rail.
About the Original Southwest Zydeco Festival
The Treasures of Opelousas, a group of concerned citizens, feared that Zydeco and Creole music were dying; in response, they organized the first festival. With the guidance and sponsorship from the Southern Development Foundation, the first Zydeco Festival in 1982 was started on a farmer’s field in Plaisance on the outskirts of Opelousas, with 400 people attending.
People attending the free Zydeco Breakfast are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and enjoy the entertainment in a relaxed and charming setting in the heart of downtown Opelousas.
